The Power of Rest: Challenging Hustle Culture This Summer

People working in the office

How many of us get excited about summer, but it often comes with ideas to “do more.” Whether

it’s staying productive, planning trips, maintaining social plans, or preparing for the second half of the year, many of us struggle to slow down without feeling guilty. In a culture that praises “the grind,” rest can feel unearned. But the truth is: rest is productive.

Rest is not laziness but a necessary part of emotional, mental, and physical functioning. Our

bodies and minds are not designed to run on empty. Without intentional rest, stress builds up,

motivation decreases, irritability increases, and burnout becomes more likely.

Hustle culture often teaches that our worth is tied to output. We may feel guilty when we are not

checking tasks off a list or constantly improving ourselves. Over time, this mindset can

disconnect us from joy, creativity, and meaningful presence. The power of rest challenges the belief that productivity is the only measure of value.

This summer, consider redefining what productivity looks like.

Productivity can also mean:

  •  Taking a mental health day

  •  Spending quality time with loved ones

  •  Allowing yourself to recharge

  •  Listening to your body’s need for pause

Rest can improve concentration, emotional resilience, creativity, and decision-making.

Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is slow down enough to recover.

If resting feels uncomfortable, notice what thoughts come up. Do you feel guilt? Pressure? Fear of falling behind or missing out? Those reactions can provide important insight into the expectations you carry for yourself.

This season, give yourself permission to embrace balance instead of burnout. You do not have to

earn rest. Rest is not an option; it is a non-negotiable.
